Description

The degree of Master of Culture and Arts (Music Pedagogue) provides the graduate with the necessary skills to function as the developer of their work community and field in their area of expertise. The student accepted in the programme shall demonstrate their research and development expertise acquired before and during the programme in their working-life oriented thesis.

The research and development studies strengthen the students’ mastery of the key methods in applied research and working life development as well as project management competence. In addition, the students acquire skills for continuous learning, which are much in demand in today’s working life, as well as for deepening and keeping their field-specific professional competence up to date.

The advanced professional studies focus on renewing pedagogy with themes that touch upon current issues in music education, such as music education technology and functional group learning.

Degree-related qualifications

There are no specific degree-related or statutory qualification requirements in the field.

Targeted competence

The graduates of the degree programme are experts on music pedagogy who

  • recognise and understand the changes that take place in the operating environment
  • develop their own actions and those of their work community to meet the changing working life needs
  • choose appropriate pedagogical and technological solutions in support of learning
  • make use of the opportunities offered by new technology in the development of learning environments
  • direct the development of their work community and network in the field.
  • continuously evaluate and deepen their competence and keep it up to date.

Degree profile

​The central themes in renewing pedagogy are functional group learning, music education technology and gamification of learning. In the functional group pedagogy studies, the students will learn about inspiring and experimental pedagogy across the boundaries through improvisation and making music together. The studies on music education technology focus on the utilisation of mobile and network learning technologies, among other topics. In the studies on the gamification of learning, the students will learn to explore the possibilities of learning music through games and play.

Structure and completion of studies

​The studies include advanced specialisation studies, elective studies and a thesis, or a working-life development assignment. The studies consist of courses and larger competence areas.

The programme is based both on the programme-specific professional competences as well as joint JAMK competences. These competences are acquired, deepened and assessed in courses derived from the following study modules:

  • renewing pedagogy
  • research and development studies
  • thesis
  • elective studies

A Personal Learning Plan (PLP) is drafted with the student in order to map their study selections and any recognition of prior learning. The competence acquired in the profession-specific courses in the programme can be deepened by selecting studies from the JAMK entire post-graduate studies course selection, related to management, leadership or internationalisation, for example. In addition, the students can utilise open online studies offered by international institutes of higher education, the MOOC courses, in accordance with the Personal Learning Plan and career plan.

The extent of the master’s thesis is approximately half of the studies, which is why the thesis is started already in the beginning of the studies. The theme of the thesis should ideally support the development needs of the student’s work community and/or field.

The student’s thesis and development assignments in the courses may be connected to implementation of research, development and innovation activities and projects in the Future Factory learning environment or development of business activities in the joint study path of entrepreneurship at JAMK.

Assessment and learning guidance

Learning outcomes are assessed in relation to the learning objectives of the course. Assessment decisions are based on the assessment criteria provided in the course descriptions. Courses are assessed on the assessment scale specified in the course description. According to its purpose, the scale may be either of five steps: 5 (excellent), 4 (very good), 3 (good), 2 (satisfactory) and 1 (adequate) or a pass (P)/fail (0). Completion of the course has been failed (fail (0)) if the student does not achieve the minimum outcomes set for completion of the course.

The student has the right to know how the criteria apply him or her. Course performance is recorded in the transcript of records no later than one month after the declared time of completion of the course and always before the end of the school year.

Study methods

The recommended period of study is two years and the study period is three years.

The studies are organised as combined face-to-face and distance learning, which enables studying while working full time and requires development which takes place in the student’s working community or other reference group. There are on average 1 to 2 classroom days per month, mainly on Thursdays and/or Fridays. In the distance learning periods, the students work on the learning tasks independently, in peer groups, or under guidance in network environments.

The learning environment of the studies consists of peer students, the students’ working communities, the operating environments in the field of music as well as the guidance services and network environments provided by JAMK.

The central working methods, with which the learning tasks of the different courses are completed, are classroom days organised in various ways, peer groups and online work.

The studies are organised as face-to-face and distance learning, which means that they can be completed while working full time. The development of the student’s working community or other reference group can be naturally integrated as a part of the studies.

Graduation

Being awarded a Master’s degree certificate requires the student to complete the studies of the degree programme within his/her study period in accordance with his/her Personal Learning Plan.Further information in the Degree Regulations.

Professional profiles of graduates with examples

A graduate from the Degree Programme in Music, Music Pedagogue (Master of Culture and Arts) can work in various teaching, management and development positions in the field of music in various educational levels. The degree provides the qualification to apply for public offices or positions as well as other tasks that require a higher post-secondary degree.

Job titles include the following, for example:

  • teacher or lecturer at a music institute
  • teacher or lecturer at a conservatoire
  • principal of a music institute or conservatoire (knowledge of studies of educational administration is also required)
  • teacher or lecturer at a university of applied sciences
  • teacher or planner-teacher in liberal adult education
  • project manager, coordinator or entrepreneur.

Further studies

The master's degree of the university of applied sciences is a Master's degree of a University. The graduate may get the opportunity to continue their studies in the scientific or artistic studies of universities (§ 37/558/2009). Students can also continue for example by applying for the corresponding follow-up training programs at foreign universities. The University of Applied Sciences also offers continuing education opportunities for specialisation studies, Higher Education Level Apprenticeship Training as well as in working life based continuing education. All further studies must be applied for separately.

Planning

​The objectives of the degree are derived from the competence needs of working life. In the planning, the results from competence need surveys for students who have graduated and currently work in the field of music have been taken into account. In addition, discussions with representatives of working life as well as the desire of the degree programme to sharpen its profile on a national level have governed the planning.

The programme also corresponds to the strategic objectives of the Finnish Music Campus. The cornerstones of the Finnish Music Campus strategy are, for instance, creating and applying new research information and developing music pedagogy based on the new information. The strategic development themes include, for instance, business competence and management within the music business and the pedagogical applications of music technology.
