The studies include advanced specialisation studies, elective studies and a thesis, or a working-life development assignment. The studies consist of courses and larger competence areas.
The learning process also progresses by competence area. General and degree programme-specific competences are linked to competence areas and courses, and they involve competence development throughout the degree programme. The students make choices within competence areas/courses according to their career plan. Competence areas of the degree programme and their descriptions:
Management and leadership in a changing operating environment (15 credits): The students can function in managerial, leadership and development positions in a multicultural work environment. They master the tools for business management in internationally networked organisations and are capable of utilising management accounting elements in managerial work.
Technological competence and management (15 cr): The students have mastered the management methods, practices and technologies of the fields of business they have selected.
Development methodologies and development competence in a technology company (5 cr): The students are able to apply national and international research-based information and methods in their own field in new and changing situations.
Master's thesis (30 cr): The thesis is a research or development project serving working life with a clear practical-application nature and a mission to support the student’s career development. During the thesis, the students demonstrate the ability to apply research data and to use the selected methods for itemising and solving working life problems as well as a readiness for independent challenging specialist work.
In addition to the above, the studies include 5 cr of elective studies that support the development of expertise, which the students include in their studies in accordance with their personal competence targets. These studies can also be chosen from JAMK's other master's degree programmes or the selection of studies offered by other institutes of higher education.
The students are offered opportunities to complete their thesis and learning tasks included in courses for their work community in a flexible manner. At the same time the student’s thesis and development assignments in the courses may be connected to implementation of research, development and innovation activities and projects in the Future Factory learning environment or development of business activities in the JAMK Generator environment.
Courses must be completed within two semesters from starting them. Exceptions include the bachelor’s thesis, practical training, special working life-oriented project studies and large courses carried out over several terms. If a course is left unfinished, the student must retake it.
During the first meeting of the course, the learning objectives and content of the course, alternative completion methods and criteria for assessment are reviewed, the exam date is set (immediate completion) and the end date of the course is announced. Work cannot be turned in after the end date. The student may attempt to complete the course three times: during the immediate completion or on two separately specified resit dates.
