General information


After completing a master's degree in health and social studies, you are able to work in challenging, multidisciplinary expert, development and management positions. You are able to apply an evidence-based knowledge base in the changing operating environment of health care and social services.

The objective of the programme is to strengthen the multi-expertise-based, preventive competence of specialists working in the social and health care sector to promote well-being, health and the ability to function in multidisciplinary study groups. The programme is intended for professionals with a bachelor of health care or social services degree in the following programmes: physiotherapy, rehabilitation counselling, midwifery, nursing, social services or occupational therapy.

In the studies in health promotion, you will develop your expert competence in health promotion and well-being on a demanding level. You will master the customer-oriented, evidence-based development and renewal of services, processes and operating models that promote health and well-being. You can predict the national and international development of the field of health care and social services and develop activities and models for health promotion in your own area and organisation based on evidence. You can act as an expert and a coordinator of health promotion in public and private organisations and associations or as an entrepreneur.

Students selected in the programme organised in Finnish may increase their international competence by applying for a Double Degree Programme, which is carried out in English in co-operation with the Austrian Carinthia University of Applied Sciences (CUAS). The language of teaching and written theses in these studies is English. The degree titles of those who have completed the Double Degree Programme will be Master of Health Care/Master of Social Services/Master of Health Care and Social Services as well as Master of Arts (Health Management) from Austria. The double degree provides capabilities for acting in the international operating environments of social and health services.

Targeted competence

The goal of the education is that the graduates of the degree programme are experts in health promotion on a demanding level, who

• have mastered the multidisciplinary knowledge base of health promotion and have an extensive understanding of the relationships between functional capacity, participation and the well-being of the population as well as health.
• develop the well-being and health of their community or region in cooperation networks.
• predict and renew the activities, methods and processes of health promotion on the level of individuals, communities and regions independently in multicultural expert and development positions in the field, or as entrepreneurs.
• have mastered the planning, management and assessment methods of health promotion.
• use critical, development-oriented working methods when working as an expert of health promotion in different kinds of public, private and non-governmental organisations.

Degree profile

The Master’s Degree Programme in Health Promotion received international accreditation for 2015–2018 from the International Union for Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE). This accreditation shows that the degree programme meets the quality criteria for international health promotion training. The health promotion studies are profiled in developing the students’ skills in accordance with the criteria for international health promotion skills. The level of competence corresponds to special expert skills in health and well-being.

In the studies in health promotion, a student will develop his/her expert competence on a demanding level for health promotion of the population and communities as a part of strategic planning and evidence-based activities. In addition, the student will acquire capabilities for developing and assessing activities that promote health and well-being. You will need expert competence on a demanding level in the development, management and renewal of multidisciplinary services in the field of health care and social services in public, private and non-governmental organisations or as an entrepreneur.

The student will also acquire capabilities for working as an expert, coordinator and developer of health promotion in multicultural and international networks of health promotion. Based on your Personal Learning Plan and career plan, you can focus your studies on the sexual and reproductive health promotion, research and development activities, management or entrepreneurship.

Structure of studies in Peppi

The structure of the studies (90 cr) is as follows:

• Core studies in Health Promotion Expertise 20 cr
• Research and development studies linked to the core studies 15 cr
• Optional professional studies: Entrepreneurship, New Business and Management Development 15 cr
• Elective studies 10 cr
• Master's thesis 30 cr

Structure and completion of studies

The studies include advanced specialisation studies, elective studies and a thesis, or a working-life development assignment. The studies consist of courses and larger competence areas.

The studies in health promotion are evidence-based, and their knowledge base is based on health sciences and branches of science supporting them. During the first 1½ years of studies, the focus is on strengthening the expertise in health promotion as well as research and development competence. The Master's thesis constitutes one third of the studies, and therefore work on the thesis begins already during the first year of studies. During the last 1–1½ years, the main focus is on the thesis and the elective studies chosen based on the Personal Learning Plan and career plan.

Studies completed in other Master's degree programmes or Master's degree studies offered by partner universities can also be accepted as optional and elective studies. In addition, the students can utilise open online studies offered by international institutes of higher education, the MOOC courses, in accordance with the Personal Learning Plan and career plan.

In addition to the courses offered within the degree programme, courses in Finnish and in English are offered by all of JAMK’s Master’s degree studies. The students make choices in accordance with their PLP within the competence areas/courses through learning tasks and the thesis. The studies are implemented as multiform studies, utilising working life and the more extensive research and development projects as learning environments. At least 5 ECTS credits of the studies in the degree programme are completed in English.

The student’s thesis and development assignments in the courses may be connected to implementation of research, development and innovation activities and projects in the Future Factory learning environment or development of business activities in the JAMK Generator environment.

Assessment and learning guidance

Learning outcomes are assessed in relation to the learning objectives of the course. Assessment decisions are based on the assessment criteria provided in the course descriptions. Courses are assessed on the assessment scale specified in the course description. According to its purpose, the scale may be either of five steps: 5 (excellent), 4 (very good), 3 (good), 2 (satisfactory) and 1 (adequate) or a pass (P)/fail (0). Completion of the course has been failed (fail (0)) if the student does not achieve the minimum outcomes set for completion of the course.

The student has the right to know how the criteria apply him or her. Course performance is recorded in the transcript of records no later than one month after the declared time of completion of the course and always before the end of the school year.

Forms of study

In education implemented as multiform studies, the studies are mainly carried out in virtual learning environments. In addition to remote learning, the studies include an average of two days of classroom teaching per month during the first 1.5 years, after which the classroom teaching consists of thesis seminar work. The studies can be completed part-time alongside work, or intensively as full-time studies. The studies are carried out in multi-professional teams, where the students can network with other professionals in the field and develop their own work community.


Being awarded a Master’s degree certificate requires the student to complete the studies of the degree programme within his/her study period in accordance with his/her Personal Learning Plan. Further information in the Degree Regulations.

​Employment and further studies

Professional profiles of graduates with examples

The degree provides the qualification to apply for public offices or positions as well as other tasks that require a higher post-secondary degree.

The graduates of the degree programme have found employment in various expert and development positions in promoting health and well-being in organisations in the field of health care and social services, municipalities, organisations and companies in positions such as project managers, project leaders or coordinators of health promotion and well-being, for example. The graduates can also work as entrepreneurs or in international positions.

​Further studies

The master's degree of the university of applied sciences is a Master's degree of a University. The graduate may get the opportunity to continue their studies in the scientific or artistic studies of universities (§ 37/558/2009). Students can also continue for example by applying for the corresponding follow-up training programs at foreign universities. University of Applied Sciences offers various opportunities for studying and learning throughout one's career. These include specialisation studies, diplomas of higher education, the extensive range of courses offered through open studies and continuing education. All further studies must be applied for separately.

Other information


The education has been planned in cooperation with companies, public and non-governmental organisations as well as the representatives of international partner universities. The views of the representatives of working life, feedback from the students participating in the education and the alumni, as well as the materials related to predicting competence needs have been taken into account in drawing up the curriculum. The planning has also taken account of the health promotion competencies drawn up by the International Union of Health Promotion and Education (IUPHE), which act as the accreditation criteria for experts in health promotion on the European level.
