Description

​The international business bachelor's degree programme provides students with the knowledge and understanding in core business management skills that they need to succeed in the global marketplace.​ Students also develop practical skills in intercultural competency, intellectual skills in managing business information, and transferrable skills in intercultural communication.​

Key learning outcomes

Intended learning outcomes are a statement of what a student will know and be able to do as result of the learning process.. In case of IB the programme level intended learning outcomes are divided into categories of Knowledge and Understanding​, Intellectual Skills, Practical Skills and Transferable Skills.

Knowledge and understanding

  • employ theoretical and conceptual knowledge to identify and analyze business problems in global contexts in terms of business viability and sustainability
  • identify and place into practice information-based decision making approaches to business and managerial problems.

Intellectual skills: Information Management in Business

  • gather, analyse and evaluate business data and information and transform empirical data into useful and actionable information
  • interprete and analyse complex business issues from multiple perspectives and critically review academic literature and other relevant information sources.

Practical Skills: Intercultural Competency

  • apply proven theoretical and conceptual knowledge of global business challenges in multicultural contexts for viable and sustainable solutions
  • operate effectively within a multicultural team environment demonstrating team-building and intercultural communication skills.

Transferable Skills: Intercultural Communication in Business

  • communicate effectively in English in oral, written and electronic formats using communication and information technology for business applications, and is able to prepare and present reports
  • exercise initiative and take personal responsibility for one´s own work in terms of timelines, professional behaviour, personal motivation and planning skills.

Professional growth and know-how

International Business 2019

Intended learning outcomes of the programme are developed throughout the years as presented in the figure. Students develop their knowledge and understanding regarding the fundamentals of business in the first year. They develop their academic skills in the second year in which they write their theses after they participate in their academic track and conduct research projects. During the third year students gain international exposure through an exchange semester at a partner institution. During the third and fourth years they also specialize in a selected area of interest (20 ECTS) and further develop their practical skills by conducting practical training (20 ECTS).

Working life cooperation and learning

Working life cooperation is an ongoing practice in the programme's curriculum. Corporate interaction is achieved through guest lecturing by industry professionals and alumni, company-assigned project studies during the second academic year (10 ECTS), practical training at companies (20 ECTS), and company-assigned theses (15 ECTS). Working life cooperation improves the quality of learning through enhanced student engagement and increases the likelihood of student employability.

Accreditation

The Prior Learning Recognition Procedures are described in the Degree Regulations and the Study Guide. Students also have alternative study options available to them in partner universities (e.g. other universities of applied sciences and universities as well as EduFutura) and in open online study portals (CampusOnline).

Graduation

Being awarded a Bachelor’s degree certificate requires the student to complete the studies of the degree programme within his/her study period in accordance with his/her Personal Learning Plan. Further information in the Degree Regulations.

There are no specific degree-related or statutory qualification requirements in the field.

Professional profiles of graduates with examples

We focus on global perspectives pertaining to the operation of a modern company, including internationalisation, marketing, strategic management, financial and legal issues. Our students will learn to recognise and leverage new business opportunities as means to increasing profitability.

The career opportunities may include:

Marketing Director, Secretary General, Export Assistant, CEO, HR Coordinator, Export Assistant, Mobile Product Manager, Area Sales Manager, B2B  Marketing Executive, Trader, Sales Consultant, Business Area Manager, Lead Planner, Account Manager, Acquisition Marketing Manager, Product Manager, Store Manager, Business and Financial Analyst and Brand Manager​.

Further studies

Students may, after graduation and a work career of at least three years, continue their studies in a Master’s degree programme at a university of applied sciences in Finland. A Master’s degree from a university of applied sciences is a higher post-secondary degree. Studies can also be continued by applying for a university Master’s degree programme or similar programmes. After a Bachelor’s degree from a university of applied sciences, it is also possible to continue studies at higher education institutes abroad in Master’s degree-level programmes. A university of applied sciences also provides opportunities for continuing education in the form of specialisation studies, open studies, online study portal (CampusOnline) and working life-based continuing education.

A student who completes a Master’s degree at a university of applied sciences may receive an opportunity for postgraduate studies in science or arts at universities (Act 558/2009, Section 37).

Planning

​JAMK School of Business' Professional Advisory Board and International Academic Board share their input in the curricula planning process. School's Adacemic Board is also one vital stakeholder in this process. The results of alumni surveys and student feedback are considered in the planning of the implementation of teaching.
