The JAMK degree programme on Mechanical Engineering is available as both full-time and part-time studies. In the full-time studies, you will, depending on your specialisation, learn to control, develop and manage manufacturing of products especially in engineering workshops or, alternatively, learn how to develop and design machines and equipment using CAD and 3D modelling software. You can expand your expertise in production technology through maintenance-related studies or strengthen your product development skills in studies focusing on sheet metal structures and user-centered oriented design, for example.

Practical applications, along with projects and exercises completed for companies play an essential role in the studies. Thanks to our extensive international cooperation network, some of the studies and projects involve international students, which helps build the foundation for an international approach – an increasingly important requirement in the work of a mechanical engineer.

The part-time studies are less dependent on place and time. The part-time studies provide the students with a strong and extensive competence on production technology and machinery design.

Targeted competence

The students' competence profile is determined by their Personal Learning Plan.

After completing the degree programme in mechanical engineering, the students possess basic expertise in natural sciences, which enables the mastery and further development of the basic skills of mechanical engineering. These include the basic skills of mechanical engineering, machine design and production technology.

Students of production engineering are able to control, develop and manage manufacturing of products. The students can deepen their knowledge further in production technology, operations control, production automation and production management. In addition to this, they can expand their competence to encompass the knowledge and skills of maintenance-related operations control, reliability technology analyses and preventive maintenance.

Students of product development can develop and design machines and equipment using CAD and 3D modelling software. The students can deepen their knowledge further in product development and machine design. In addition, they can expand their competence to include user-centered design, for example.

The competence gained from the part-time studies is made from the competences of both specialisation options, by combining extensively the control, development and management of goods production and the basic design of machines and equipment.

The students have good capabilities for continuous professional development, diverse communications and information retrieval. They have adopted an entrepreneurial and innovative approach, and are capable of working as an entrepreneur. They can also work in an international work environment.

More specifically, after completing the degree programme in mechanical engineering, the students are capable of the following things (targeted competence of the degree programme and its connection to the EUR-ACE requirements):

  • The students are capable of continuous self-improvement and diverse communication as well as information retrieval in different work and cultural environments, and have a strong ethical foundation in their field and an entrepreneurial attitude.   • The students are capable of performing technical calculations, understanding technical documentation and both domestic and foreign publications in the technical field, and applying them in their own work (EUR-ACE: Engineering analysis, Investigations).

  • The students understand the operating principles and selection criteria of the most important machine components. They are capable of performing strength calculations and can model machine components and create workshop drawings based on them.   • The students understand the realities of the global mechanical engineering industry/production and can view the engineering workshop production as a whole. They possess the basic capabilities for production technology and economy. (EUR-ACE: Knowledge and understanding, Engineering analysis)

Students of production engineering

  • The students are familiar with the various production systems and can take them into account in their choices (EUR-ACE: Engineering analysis, Engineering design)
  • The students can control production, they know the methods and software used, and they can develop processes utilising a variety of development techniques (EUR-ACE: Engineering analysis, Engineering design, Investigations, Engineering practice)
  • The students have mastered the production technologies of engineering workshop production – for sheet metal products, in particular – and the basics of service production in such a way that they can make justified choices and develop production (EUR-ACE: Engineering analysis, Engineering design, Investigations, Engineering practice)

Students of product development

  • The students can develop and design machines and equipment that are cost-efficient from the perspective of international customers (EUR-ACE: Engineering analysis, Engineering design, Investigations, Engineering Practice)
  • The students are capable of utilising modern software and taking into account technical factors relating to strength, material and manufacturing (EUR-ACE: Engineering analysis, Engineering design, Investigations, Engineering practice)
  • The students know the basics of actuator technology and can select the appropriate equipment for it. (EUR-ACE: Engineering analysis, Engineering design, Investigations, Engineering practice).

Degree profile

Mechanical engineers design and commission the latest technologies in workshop production, or perform various product development and design tasks related to machines and equipment. The cooperation between the degree programme in mechanical engineering and foreign schools and companies provides the students with the opportunity to form strong internal ties. The degree programme focuses particularly on sheet metal technology. The programme is also characterised by its entrepreneurial perspective and attitude.

Depending on the choice of specialisation, the core subject area in Mechanical Engineering studies is production engineering (with special expertise in production methods, production control and sheet metal technologies) as well as product development and machine design utilising the latest design software.

The central content areas of the part-time studies are the basics of production technology, production control and machinery design.

The teaching staff of the mechanical engineering studies and our students keep a constant eye on developments in the field to ensure that we are always capable of facing the challenges of increasingly international business and industry. During the studies, the students will complete project assignments together with companies, and study utilising information networks and virtual environments that mimic reality.

The training provides mechanical engineering students with the opportunity to obtain diverse knowledge and competence in production development tasks, product development and machine design.

Degree programme application and admission

Structure and completion of studies

Early on in their studies, all students will prepare a Personal Learning Plan under the guidance of a career tutor, including the planned courses and their completion times.

In the full-time studies, you will spend the first two years completing basic studies in natural sciences and mechanical engineering as well as transferrable skills with other mechanical engineering students. These will provide you with the necessary capabilities for the orienting core studies.

After this, you will specialise in either product development or production engineering, according to your choice, and complete the appropriate core studies. Depending on your choice and opportunities, you can expand your competence towards maintenance or user-centered design.

In the part-time studies, the first two years focus on basic studies of natural sciences and mechanical engineering as well as transferrable skills, which will provide you with the necessary capabilities for the core studies of mechanical engineering, which will then be applied in practice particularly when completing your thesis.

In addition, you can expand your competence with courses from the full-time studies, and select, if possible, for instance production technology, product development, maintenance or user-oriented design.

Regardless of the way the degree is organised, the project studies in particular emphasise innovation and development competence, in which students get to work in the multidisciplinary Future Factory learning environments, if possible.

The Mechanical Engineering degree programme was granted the international EUR-ACE Bachelor quality label on 28 May 2015. Thanks to this, those who have graduated from the programme are entitled to use the internationally recognised status of EUR-ACE Bachelor (

Assessment and learning guidance

Forms of study

The full-time studies follow a weekly schedule and include plenty of classroom and laboratory teaching. In addition to this, the students have exercises and assignments to be completed independently (individually or in groups).

In order to participate in part-time studies, the students must be capable of operating in digital learning environments. The part-time studies flexibly combine self-learning, distance learning and classroom learning in order to reduce the dependence of the studies on place and time. This type of studying form requires more self-direction from the students. Part-time studies will suit you if you have previous experience in the field, or if you want more flexibility regarding the time or place of completing your studies due to your life situation.


To be awarded a Bachelor’s degree certificate, the student must complete the studies of the degree programme within his/her study period in accordance with his/her Personal Learning Plan. Further information in the Degree Regulations.

Professional profiles of graduates with examples

The study programme prepares students for production development and expert tasks or various types of product development and design tasks. In addition to this, it provides capabilities for acting as an entrepreneur and, with experience, serving in supervisory positions.

Production engineering: production development and control tasks. Production management for those with more experience.

Product development: product development and machine design tasks and, with experience, supervisory tasks in product development and design.

You can use the elective studies to supplement your studies to support procurement tasks, for example.

Further studies

University of Applied Sciences offers various opportunities for studying and learning throughout one's career. These include Master's Degree studies, specialisation studies, diplomas of higher education, the extensive range of courses offered through open studies and continuing education.

The student who has graduated with a Bachelor's degree may continue his/her studies in a Master's degree programme after gaining at least three years of work experience. A Master's degree from a university of applied sciences is a higher post-secondary degree. Studies can also be continued by applying for a university Master's degree programme or similar programmes. After a Bachelor's degree from a university of applied sciences, it is also possible to continue studies at higher education institutes abroad in Master's degree level programmes.

A student who completes a Master's degree may receive an opportunity for further studies in science or arts at universities (Section 37/558/2009). All further studies must be applied for separately.


The aim of the degree programme in Mechanical Engineering is to produce engineers that meet the needs of trade and industry. With that in mind, the competence targets of the degree programme have been determined based on the current and future needs of trade and industry, with the help of corporate employees, industry experts and public studies on future trends. The Head of Department is, together with the Programme Coordinator, responsible for resource management and monitoring the progress of the planning process for competence targets.

The competence targets are prepared by a work group consisting of teachers of the degree programmes. The members of the group negotiate with representatives of trade and industry in their respective fields on competence needs in the labour market. The group then compiles the competence targets and defines them for the degree programme.

The competence targets are divided into competence areas and subordinate qualifications, and incorporated into the degree programme structure in the form of various courses. The targets are reviewed by a committee consisting of representatives of trade and industry, student members, the Head of Department and the Programme Coordinator.
