The degree programme in Information and Communications Technology at JAMK provides the students with good readiness to act in specialist tasks in the field of ICT in a constantly changing internationalizing society. The ICT knowledge is expanded in specialisation options: cybersecurity, media-, software- and data network engineering.

Targeted competence

After completing the degree programme in Information and Communications Technology the student has basic knowledge on the core contents of natural sciences, which enables the command and development of basic ICT skills.

The student specialising in his/her own specialisation option controls, develops and manages projects. In the specialisation option, the student deepens his/her knowledge in cybersecurity, media engineering, software engineering and data network engineering. In addition, the student can expand his/her knowledge to e.g. game and mobile programming, design of IT services, ethical hacking, 3D visualisation and the Internet of Things (IoT/IoE).

The students are equipped to develop themselves professionally as well as retrieve information and communicate in a versatile manner. The student applies and manages information in his/her own field. He/she has readiness to work as an entrepreneur and in international working environments.

After completing the degree programme in Information and Communications Technology, the student  (knowledge targeted in the degree programme and its connection with the EUR-ACE-requirements):

  • After completing the degree programme in Information and Communications Technology, the students have basic knowledge of the core contents of natural sciences, mathematics and technology essential for them to meet the other objectives of the ICT education.  (EUR-ACE: Knowledge and Understanding)

  • The student applies his/her knowledge to solving technical problems, to research work as well as process planning. He/she develops practical competences and makes technical, calculated and safe solutions in co-operation with both technical and non-technical persons.   • After graduation the student develops his/her own knowledge according to on the principles of life-long learning based on the development of technology and identification of his/her own abilities. The student works in projects and manages project work. He/she works in teams and communicates effectively in various reference groups. The information and communications technology engineers work e.g. in software development, cybersecurity, embedded systems and network technologies.

PEDAGOGY AND LEARNING PLATFORMS: The most important teaching method is learning by doing and practical orientation. The students utilize versatile, authentic laboratory environments such as  RGCE (Realistic Global Cyber Environment), Spidernet (Data Network technology laboratory), Labranet (Study network) and Challenge Factory. In addition, the studies include lectures, project-type learning assignments, group work and online studies. In the third and fourth year, each student will implement a challenging project in co-operation with a client. During the project, the student applies his/her knowledge to practices of project work using his/her professional competences as well as creates contacts to working life. The learning and development platforms are utilized in the education.

INTERNATIONALITY is an important part of the IT engineering degree. Tools for internationalization at home are courses implemented in English. The student can develop his/her internationalisation competence by leaving for a student exchange at one of the several partner universities. Completing a practical training or a thesis abroad is also possible. The development of language skills is supported by the language of the field, English, study materials in English, English language studies and professional studies carried out in English.

If a student is considering ENTREPRENEURSHIP he/she can include entrepreneurship studies in his/her degree. The student can complete a part of his/her studies in the study path of JAMK Generator (the Finnish site) – a development environment common for all students or participate in the labs of  Future Factory  operations model. Future Factory makes it possible to operate in development platforms and companies. The student can also develop his/her entrepreneurship and marketing competences in optional professional studies.

Information and Communications Technology

The figure above describes the general structure of Information and Communications Technology education. The studies start with common basic studies for ICT and transferable skills. The basic studies in natural sciences provide students with the mathematical and scientific knowledge necessary for the degree-related professional studies.

The basic professional studies of ICT familiarise students with the basic skills needed in their profession: digitalisation, programming, databases, Internet technologies, web technologies, cybersecurity and operation systems. These skills are applied to practical projects. During the third academic year the student also takes specialisation option studies which are chosen by the student based on his/her own interest and targeted profession. Part of the optional professional studies can also be selected from other degree programmes, and they expand the student’s competence in e.g. entrepreneurship or marketing.

During the first term the studies include so called ”sneak peek” courses where the student is familiarised with various specialisation options and possible work tasks in that particular field. In the spring term the student starts studying in his/her own specialisation option and takes core studies that continue until the end of the third academic year. The core studies of the degree comprise common specialisation option professional studies of the specialization option and the core professional studies targeted at certain special fields selected by the student. With these studies the student develops into a specialist in his/her chosen field and demonstrates his/her ability to work in engineering duties after graduation.

The Cybersecurity specialisation option familiarizes the students with the operation of software in various devices. The studies familiarize the students with secure operation of business and continuity in IT environment. Audits are practiced by testing self-made software and fixing the faults detected.  After the testing and audit studies, the student is able to implement corresponding outputs in projects for other software developers. During the first academic year the studies focus on network infrastructure and basics of programming. In the second academic year the student implements his/her own application in protocol programming and learns about software testing. In the third year he/she delves into protection of corporate networks by means of data security technologies. The studies enable specialisation in data secure implementation of corporate services, ethical hacking or design and implementation of a cybersecurity exercise. In the media engineering specialisation option the students concentrate on the implementation of web and its services (online shops, forums, blogs and games etc.). After the studies the students can define, design and implement web pages taking into account the needs of various target groups. The specialisation option enables students to specialise in the design and implementation of the part visible in the browser highlighting user interface design, user experience and visual implementation. The second option is to focus on design and implementation of software run on servers as well as saving data in a database or data storages. In the Software engineering specialisation option the studies include e.g. mobile, network and game programming. The student uses development tools and methods of the most common software in the assignments. If desired, the student can also focus on embedded systems programming. The first academic year familiarizes the student with the field in general, and the focus is on developing the basic programming skills. In the second year, the emphasis is on web technologies and various methods used in software development. In the third year the students implement a software project, which prepares the students well for implementing software projects in the future. Data network engineering specialisation option familiarizes the students with various network technologies and the installation, configuration, integration and maintenance of online service platforms. Students define, design and implement various information networks. Besides network technologies, also knowledge of servers, service management, service automation, data centres and data security is an essential part of the studies. First year studies familiarize the students with various operating systems and networks through theory and practical hands on assignments. The degree programme prepares students for design, implementation and development tasks in working life. In addition, it also provides knowledge for entrepreneurship and project management.

Further studies

University of Applied Sciences offers various opportunities for studying and learning throughout one's career. These include Master's Degree studies, specialisation studies, diplomas of higher education, the extensive range of courses offered through open studies and continuing education.

The student who has graduated with a Bachelor's degree may continue his/her studies in a Master's degree programme after gaining at least three years of work experience. A Master's degree from a university of applied sciences is a higher post-secondary degree. Studies can also be continued by applying for a university Master's degree programme or similar programmes. After a Bachelor's degree from a university of applied sciences, it is also possible to continue studies at higher education institutes abroad in Master's degree level programmes.

A student who completes a Master's degree may receive an opportunity for further studies in science or arts at universities (Section 37/558/2009). All further studies must be applied for separately.

There is a master’s degree programme for information and Communications Technology students. At the moment, the content is cybersecurity.

Planning

The learning objectives of the degree programme are based on international (EUR-ACE) competence descriptions. In addition to these, the objectives are based on the needs of local companies. Central Finland’s regional strategies provide a general overview of the future development of the area, thus also providing a starting point for the planning of the degree programme. More specific information about the needs of companies has been gained through the IT Institute’s Advisory Board work, which provides an extensive understanding of the industry’s development prospects in Central Finland.

In addition to the Advisory Board, the competence needs of companies have been surveyed by specialisation option-specific events, which have provided detailed information about the competence profiles of people needed in the field.

Responsibility for the planning and implementation of the Degree Programme in Information and Communications Technology lies with the Head of Department and the Education Officers.
