General information


In the degree programme in Social Services, the studies are practically-oriented and based on theoretical multidisciplinary information and research. The studies include team learning, lectures, online teaching as well as project studies and practical training. Bachelors of Social Services may work after graduation as experts of social counselling and education for municipalities, companies and organisations. In their work, they promote the well-being and equality of individuals and communities and develop social services to correspond to changing social conditions.

Degree-related qualifications

The qualification requirements for the field of social services are laid down in the Act (2005/272) and the Government Decree (608/2005) on Qualification Requirements for Social Welfare Professionals (a new act will be published in 2016). According to them, a Bachelor of Social Services can work as a social counsellor, kindergarten teacher and in managerial positions in social welfare including guidance of work with clients. For the position of a kindergarten teacher, he or she is required to have completed studies focused on social pedagogy consisting of 60 cr at minimum.


Targeted competence

After completing the degree programme in Social Services, Bachelors of Social Services are familiar with the service system that promotes well-being and social security, social rehabilitation methods, as well as the forms and methods of producing social services. They can develop services and service structures and anticipate future service needs and also their digital changes. Bachelors of Social Services can support, guide and encourage the participation of their clients at different stages of growth development and learning, as well as families and other communities in their everyday life and changing situations. They act as experts in networking and multi-professional social and health services as well as in development and first-line management positions. They follow professional and ethical principles in their work.

Degree profile

The students' special competence is formed by the competence areas of social counselling or education chosen based on their Personal Learning Plan and career plan. The profile of the degree programme in Social Services is focused on social counselling, early education, child welfare and family work, social rehabilitation as well as first-line management. In the optional vocational studies and practical training of the degree programme, the students have an opportunity to develop entrepreneurship and internationalisation competence in the field of social services.

Structure and completion of studies

In the first year of studies, the students acquire basic skills in client work and operating environments as well as promoting well-being and health in the field of health care and social services. They adopt a dialogic, reflective, entrepreneurial and investigative approach to work as well as the principles of professional ethics. In the second year, they develop their professional competence in the methods of social counselling or early education, instruction tasks, client work and client services.

During the third and fourth years, the students acquire more participatory social competence, development competence with a research approach and management competence. Towards the end of the studies, they expand, deepen and apply their competence in the area of expertise in social service that they have selected in accordance with their career plan and taking advantage of a multi-professional approach. The students' degree can also be constructed based on a personal focus on entrepreneurship in the field of social services or in international work.

To be awarded a Bachelor’s degree certificate, the student must complete the studies of the degree programme within his/her study period in accordance with his/her Personal Learning Plan.

JAMK University of Applied Sciences gives the student a certificate for completing a degree at a university of applied sciences (210 credits). The certificate includes a transcript of records, in which the Bachelors of Social Services who have become qualified as a kindergarten teacher receive a separate mention of their qualifications.

Employment and further studies

​Professional profiles of graduates with examples

Bachelors of Social Services are mainly employed in specialist positions in municipalities, the private sector in the field of social services as well as organisations, most often in various counselling and educational positions as well as managerial and supervisory positions in service units.

 Further studies

The students may, after graduation and a work career of at least three years, continue their studies in a Master’s degree programme. A Master’s degree from a university of applied sciences is a higher post-secondary degree. Studies can also be continued by applying for a university Master’s degree programme or similar programmes in Finland or abroad.

The University of Applied Sciences also offers continuing education possibilities in specialisation studies and in working life-based continuing education. A student who completes an upper post-secondary degree may receive an opportunity for further studies in science or arts at universities (Section 37/558/2009) or he/she can apply for teacher education programmes. All further studies must be applied for separately.

​Other information


The planning of education is based on an extensive literature review and an analysis of the future of the operating environment in health care and social services as well as interviews with experts on future competence. In addition to the teachers, the planning work has involved representatives of the students as well as representatives of the field of health care and social services from public, private and non-governmental organisations.  The common and profession-specific future competence in health care and social services have been mapped in the planning meetings.
