Targeted competence

Graduates of Hospitality Management know the operating environment of tourism and catering services or facility services along with the international nature of the field and are able to operate in it.

Bachelors of Hospitality Management can systematically develop the quality of business in the field and manage sustainable and profitable business activities. They can create innovative service products based on deep product expertise and commercialise them. They know the special characteristics of marketing services and can sell services in a customer-oriented way.

After graduation, Bachelors of Hospitality Management have extensive professional competence: practical basic knowledge and skills and their theoretical foundation for working in specialist and managerial positions in the field, good communication and language skills, and prerequisites for following developments in the field and continuous education.

​Degree profile

The Hospitality Management studies combine strong theoretical knowledge in the field with diverse working life projects. The pedagogy is based on experiential learning. The personal study path can be made multidisciplinary by combining studies in sustainable gastronomy, user-oriented facility services and innovative tourism based on own interest and professional orientation.

The university’s research, development and innovation activities enable independent and active students to build excellent working life contacts and deepen their expertise in the field. Internationalisation is supported in several ways, and student exchange or practical training is planned as part of the personal study path.

During the education, the students develop into professionals in profitable and responsible service business. In full-time studies, the core studies of the Hospitality Management degree consist of study modules in innovative tourism, sustainable gastronomy and/or user-oriented facility services, and the degree is completed with optional studies from e.g. the offering of the other degree programmes at JAMK. In part-time studies, the students focus on sustainable gastronomy. Key focus areas of studies include customer and user orientation, creating services that provide experiences, developing service concepts and responsible business. Entrepreneurial thinking and action are required in all studies.

Structure and completion of studies

The student’s activeness, personal study path and initiative are key factors in competence development during Hospitality Management education.  

During the first academic year, the student learns the basics of business and the operating environment of the field. Internationalisation is a central part of the studies through international exchange, practical training and the fact that part of the instruction is in English. During the second year of full-time studies, the students specialise further in the core studies of sustainable gastronomy, innovative tourism and/or user-oriented facility services. In part-time studies, the focus is on sustainable gastronomy. General transferable skills, such as language and communication skills, research and development competence, entrepreneurship skills and ICT skills also develop during the first and second year of studies. Studies in the third year emphasise innovation and development competence and deepening the professional understanding in the student’s area of special expertise in accordance with the personal study path. The last year of studies is concluded by the thesis, which is always written for a client.

​Professional profiles of graduates with examples

After graduation, Bachelors of Hospitality Management with a focus on tourism have good capabilities for working in managerial, marketing, development and sales positions in companies and organisations in the field of tourism. Bachelors of Hospitality Management also have good capabilities for working as entrepreneurs in tourism. Job titles include, for example, team leader, congress manager, hotel manager, product developer, customer service manager, reception manager at a hotel and event coordinator.

A Bachelor of Hospitality Management with a focus on sustainable gastronomy can manage food and catering services in professional kitchens or work in product development for the food industry. Job titles may include, for example, restaurant manager, food service manager, service manager, team leader, customer service manager and product developer. The education also provides a good starting point for starting your own enterprise.

Bachelors of Hospitality Management who have completed the study module on user-oriented facility services function as experts of facilities and facility services in various environments, such as business parks and hotels. They manage, develop and sell user-oriented facility services to corporate customers. Job titles include facility services manager, project manager, service representative, janitor services coordinator, project secretary, facility secretary, entrepreneur, head of real estate and facility manager.


Further studies

The students may, after graduation and a work career of at least three years, continue their studies in a Master’s degree programme. It is possible to complete a master's degree in Hospitality Management at JAMK. A Master’s degree from a university of applied sciences is a higher post-secondary degree. Studies can also be continued by applying for a university Master’s degree programme or similar programmes. After a Bachelor’s degree from a university of applied sciences, it is also possible to continue studies at higher education institutes abroad in Master’s degree level programmes.

In addition, the University of Applied Sciences offers continuing education possibilities in specialisation studies and in working life-based continuing education. A student who completes an upper post-secondary degree may receive an opportunity for further studies in science or arts at universities (Section 37/558/2009). All further studies must be applied for separately.

​Other information


The close connections with working life of the experts and students in Hospitality Management education and the research and development projects continuously produce information to support the planning and development of the education. The experts are active in the Finnish and international networks of the field and they participate in the trainings for those operating in the field. The advisory board of the School of Business participates systematically in the development of the education from the point of view of the needs of working life, and it has also assessed this curriculum.
