General information


A nurse who has completed the degree programme in nursing (Bachelor’s degree) plans, implements and develops nursing that promotes, maintains and restores well-being and health and prevents and heals illnesses and hospice care. The human-oriented work emphasises the support, guidance and nursing of clients/patients in multi-professional teams as well as the development and management of nursing.

Studying is practically-oriented with almost one-third of studies taking place as practical training. Part of studies is implemented in a multidisciplinary fashion with other students in simulation learning environments and in working life-oriented projects while making use of online and project learning. Previously acquired competence can be accredited and, thus, speed up graduation. The studies enable the creation of an individual career path, for example, by focusing on the development entrepreneurship and internationalisation readiness. International experience can be accumulated by completing part of the theory studies or practical training abroad.

Degree-related qualifications

The occupational title of nurse (Bachelor’s degree) can only be used and the profession practised by a graduated registered nurse (Bachelor’s degree).

The National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health (VALVIRA) registers a person having completed the degree programme in nursing (Bachelor’s degree) according to the Health Care Professionals Act (559/1994).

The education meets the directive (2013/55/EU) of the European Union on the recognition of professional qualifications.


Targeted competence

The learning objectives of the degree programme in nursing at JAMK University of Applied Sciences are based on the document Curricular Work Criteria 2015–2016 as well as Finnish and international nursing degree-specific competence.

According to the curriculum, the degree programme graduates are specialists with wide-ranging nursing competence who are able to apply the information and skills of the profession critically in the different, multi-cultural operating environments of nursing. They are capable of operating in nursing specialist positions making use of research information as the basis of actions. They embody a strong internal sense of entrepreneurship and want to operate in an entrepreneurial manner. They are able to acquire special competence when required by work tasks and to develop with the changes in the working life. They can operate according to the ethical principles of nursing and assume responsibility for the development of both themselves and the work community.

The profile of the degree programme in nursing (bachelor’s degree) is focused on the promotion of families’ well-being and health, strong clinical competence, internationalisation and entrepreneurship. The studies put an emphasis on team working based on multiple specialists and the possibility to develop their own nursing professional skill from the perspective of internationalisation and/or entrepreneurship.

Degree programme application and admission

Structure and completion of studies

The studies in the degree programme in nursing (Bachelor’s degree) are based, besides nursing science, on other health sciences and branches of science supporting it, such as natural science and medicine, social science and behavioural science.

The first year of studies focuses on the operating environment and clientship of the social and health services in multi-professional student groups as well as on the promotion of well-being, health and functional capacity. During the second and third year of studies, demonstration-based theoretical and clinical competence in nursing is acquired while strengthening decision-making skills in nursing, guidance and teaching competence as well as competence related to the quality and safety of social and health services. During the last half year of studies, the student can deepen his or her professional competence in the study module for developing professional expertise by focusing his or her studies on an area of nursing he or she has selected. The studies for developing professional expertise also enable the student to strengthen his or her competence in management and entrepreneurship as well as competence in the ethicality of nursing and professionalism. The studies in the degree programme in nursing include a bachelor's thesis that is a research, development or innovation project implemented based on the development needs of working life.

Approximately one-third of the studies are implemented as practical training promoting professional skill according to the student’s Personal Learning Plan (PLP) in social and health care services in the public and/or private sector, projects as well as in the simulation environments of JAMK University of Applied Sciences. The student can also develop his or her competence by completing theory studies and/or practical training promoting professional competence abroad either in English or some other language that he or she has mastered. Part of the studies included in the degree programme are completed in English in Finland.

Part of the studies can be completed in research and development projects and/or in an environment supporting entrepreneurship competence, such as in the Generator or cooperative operations according to the Personal Learning Plan.

​Assessment and learning guidance

Forms of study

In full-time studies the students form multi-professional teams at the start of their studies. Students from different degree programmes in health care and social services study in your team.  The teams operate independently and responsibly in different kinds of learning situations, such as projects. The students' common basic skills in health care and social services, which form a basis for the work, are constructed with the help of team dialogue. After the first study year, the teamwork continues with students in one's own field.

People in the team learn by doing together, and the importance of dialogue in learning is highlighted. The team's coach supports learning. Team study includes dialogue practice, lectures, learning tasks both together with the team and individually, exams, online studies and practical training that promotes vocational skills, as well as participation in working life projects. The full-time studies require participation in studies on weekdays.

Part-time studies combine online learning, independent studies, group work and classroom learning. Working methods include e.g. learning tasks, lectures, small group work and counselling. The study requires having an independent, active approach to studying, motivation, and the desire to take responsibility for your own learning. Online learning requires basic IT skills, a data connection and equipment. During the first year, the students meet on approximately two days per month to study in multidisciplinary teams.  In addition, the studies may include some theme weeks. During the following years, the studies include classroom learning and practical training periods. Part-time studies will suit you if you have previous experience in the field or if you want more flexibility due to your life situation regarding the time or place of completing your studies.


To be awarded a Bachelor’s degree certificate, the student must complete the studies of the degree programme within his/her study period in accordance with his/her Personal Learning Plan. Further information in the Degree Regulations.

Employment and further studies

​Professional profiles of graduates with examples

A nurse (Bachelor’s degree) can be employed in diverse positions of the social and health services in the public and private sector as well as in associations. A nurse (Bachelor’s degree) works in nursing specialist positions, for example, at the receptions of health care centres and outpatient clinics, at the wards of health care centres and hospitals as well as in home care, in companies of the nursing and caring field, associations and project positions. A nurse (Bachelor’s degree) can also work as an entrepreneur as well as in international positions.

 Further studies

A registered health care professional who has completed the degree programme in nursing (bachelor’s degree) can apply, after at least three years of work experience, to become a student in a master's degree in the social and health studies (90 credits). The programmes leading to a master's degree in the social and health studies at the JAMK University of Applied Sciences include Health Promotion, Advanced Nursing Practice and Health Care and Social Services Development and Management. A Master’s degree from a university of applied sciences is a higher post-secondary degree. Studies can also be continued by applying for a university Master’s degree programme or similar programmes. After a Bachelor’s degree from a university of applied sciences, it is also possible to continue studies at higher education institutes abroad in Master’s degree level programmes.

In addition, the University of Applied Sciences offers continuing education possibilities in specialisation studies and in working life-based continuing education. A student who completes a master's degree may receive an opportunity for further studies in science or arts at universities (Section 37/558/2009). All further studies must be applied for separately.

The bases for the planning of the degree programme in nursing are the Professional Qualifications Directive of the European Union (2005/36/EC), the requirements set by the Health Care Professionals Act (559/1994) and Decree (564/1994) for the education, the national competency areas for the nurse (2013), the professional competence requirements of the nurse (Tervaprojekti project 2006, Ministry of Education and Culture), as well as the national core curriculum of the degree programmes leading to a post-secondary degree of the JAMK University of Applied Sciences 2015–2016.

The planning work of the degree programme and the definition of the curriculum learning objectives have involved not only teachers, but also nursing students as well as working-life representatives from basic health care’s outpatient and institutional care and special health care.

The planning has observed, among other things, anticipatory results on the qualification requirements of nursing professions from nursing development projects by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health and the National Institute for Health and Welfare.

Based on research information and anticipatory information arising from working life, the contents of the courses are reviewed annually in order to guarantee the competence required in working life.
