General information


Music educator studies are aimed at strong musical and pedagogical competence. Instrument studies, playing music together, workshops, musical perception and instruction subjects and modules that support creativity provide a robust foundation for developing professional skills – both in classical music and pop/jazz music. The practical intensive courses, projects and productions make working life part of the studies. The studies offer opportunities to make new contacts and to learn in diverse ways in different learning environments. The foreign degree and exchange students as well as the visiting experts make the learning environment international. The multinational staff also brings foreign languages and cultures as a natural part of the musical community. The pedagogical studies develop the student’s skills as a teacher and give general competence as a teacher.

Targeted competence

Graduates of the degree programme in Music have extensive knowledge in music and a strong pedagogical competence as well as high level skills as a musician in practice. Music pedagogues can apply these skills in different kinds of changing operating environments – both as an employee and as an entrepreneur. The entrepreneurship, interaction and internationalisation competence acquired during the studies create capabilities to operate in networks and multi-professional teams in creative and adjacent fields, such as media and the wellness sector. Music pedagogues are able to experiment and create new things and productise their own competence. They have the capabilities for lifelong learning, creative problem-solving and maintaining professional skills and personal functional capacity and ability to work. They act ethically and support sustainable development.

​Degree profile

After the first study year, the students in the degree programme can shape their profile by developing the competences required in the positions of instrument teacher, music instructor, early childhood music instructor or musical theatre instructor. All study paths create capabilities for extensive knowledge in the field of music, a high level of practical musicianship and provide skills to apply competence in different changing operating environments. The studies include studies that support entrepreneurship, which help the students to productise their competence and promote employment.

In addition, the Finnish Music Campus, a centre of excellence of three educational levels, makes it possible to create and utilise an extensive network of expert and student colleagues and to transfer smoothly from one educational level to another.

Structure and completion of studies

The curriculum for the degree programme in Music is based on the working life-oriented competence areas of music and on the university’s common and national degree programme-specific qualifications. The students make choices within competence areas/courses according to their career plan. The competence areas of the degree programme are musicianship, teaching and entrepreneurship. In addition to these, transferable skills are developed in the competence module common to all of the students at JAMK University of Applied Sciences.

The degree programme in Music provides an opportunity to develop musicianship along with acquiring pedagogical competence. The pedagogical studies, which can be completed either in Finnish or English, provide the students with general teaching qualifications. In addition, the studies related to musicianship and teaching coach the students in meeting different kinds of audiences and learners.

JAMK University of Applied Sciences' degree programme in Music familiarises the students in the field of music and its adjacent fields already at the start of their studies. The knowledge of the field gained during the familiarisation phase helps the students to make justified choices and set goals for their own career. A personal study path, supported by counselling, makes it possible to reach these goals.

​Professional profiles of graduates with examples

Those who have graduated from JAMK University of Applied Sciences' degree programme in Music work in music schools and institutes, community colleges, adult education centres as well as youth and amateur theatres in different positions, such as instrument and theory teachers, early childhood music educators, choir leaders, conductors or theatrical expression instructors.

In addition to teaching tasks, music educators also work as musicians who encounter diverse audiences at day care centres and schools, theatres, concert halls and clubs as well as care and nursing homes. In addition to being musician entrepreneurs, pedagogues also employ others by establishing companies, such as music schools and companies providing educational and content production services.

 Further studies

The students may, after graduation as Bachelors of Culture and Arts and a work career of at least three years, continue their studies in a Master’s degree programme. Studies can also be continued by applying for a university Master’s degree programme or similar programmes. After a Bachelor’s degree from a university of applied sciences, it is also possible to continue studies at higher education institutes abroad in Master’s degree level programmes.

In addition, the university of applied sciences offers continuing education possibilities in specialisation studies and in working life-based continuing education.  All further studies must be applied for separately.

The music department of the University of Jyväskylä, which functions at the Finnish Music Campus, offers natural opportunities for further studies in music.

​Other information


The planning work of the degree programme and the definition of the curriculum learning objectives have involved not only teachers, but also representatives of the students as well as experts from working life. Competence in music has been mapped with our own Musiikkialan työelämän pitkän aikavälin osaamistarpeet (Long-term competence needs of working life in the field of music) survey. The curriculum work has also utilised the following, among other things: the reports from the Toive project (concerning operating environments and competence needs in the field of music) administered by the Sibelius Academy, as well as several Finnish and international studies and reports.
