Study counsellor – support and guidance in challenging situations

Each JAMK unit has a study counsellor with whom you can confidentially discuss any study-related issues that are bothering you. If you have issues with time management, your family situation or health, for example, or if you have had a long absence from studies, are considering dropping out or are worried about completing your studies, you should contact the study counsellor of your unit.

If you need individual support with your studies regarding learning challenges, disability, illness, nervous stress or cultural background, the study counsellor can help you survey the different available forms of support and give guidance with seeking support.

Find your study counsellor information below or in the staff search (login required).

Student tutors, equal support network of student life

Student tutors act as peer instructors for students, and as guides at the beginning of studies and during studies. As older students, the tutors have the privilege of sharing experiences and knowledge about questions on new students’ minds, and of introducing the new students to each other, their new study environment and the student life of Jyväskylä. Tutors understand what new students are going through in their lives and emotions and will be able to help with issues related to leisure time and school. A little chat with your tutor will help you to forget the worries of daily life. Tutoring takes place all year, but is more intensive during periods when new students arrive, at the start of the fall and the spring semesters. All tutors are recruited and trained by Student Union JAMKO. Recruitment of new tutors takes place every January. Apply to this A-team in the next recruitment period!

There are different types of tutors. Peer tutors help Finnish degree students, and degree tutors are the support network of English degree programme students. Exchange tutors support the incoming exchange students during their whole exchange experience. There are also well-being tutors within these sectors, who support the exercise services of JAMKO and Academic Sports and encourage students in matters related to exercise and well-being. Peer tutoring is also provided with part-time students taken into consideration, which is why JAMKO also recruits part-time study tutors to serve as tutors for students implementing their degree programmes as part-time studies.

Every student has the right to have a tutor. Tutors will be assigned to new student at the beginning of their studies. If this is not true in your case, contact your career tutor or the student union!

Mentors supporting student life

Do you ever get that feeling, when peer support would be needed? You are a 2nd or a 3rd year student and your own peer tutors, who helped you during your first year at JAMK, may be at practical training or already graduated. Where would one get peer guidance and experience-based help?

The answer is Mentoring. Mentors are students who have been trained to work as peer supporters when the studies have continued from the first year. Mentors help their fellow students with their own experiences and knowledge gained from the trainings. You can contact mentor with every kind of questions related to studying and student life as well as your well-being. Furthermore, the mentors support the tutors for the duration of the tutoring year, providing support and advice in tutoring-related matters and any challenges.

Harassment Contact Person

The harassment contact person of Student Union JAMKO supports you when you feel like having been bullied or harassed by a fellow student or the staff. Harassment can be, for example, discrimination, unequal treatment when it comes to evaluation, singling out, threatening, or any verbal or physical behaviour which the object of harassment considers distressing or abusive.

If you are subjected to harassment, contact the student union. JAMKO has nominated a harassment contact person, whom students can contact in possible cases of harassment. All further actions will be decided in co-operation with the student. The harassment contact person acts with strict confidentiality.

Study Psychologist

We have two study psychologists at JAMK. Study psychologists guide and support JAMK degree students in issues related to learning, motivation and coping.

You can contact them in matters related to issues that impede your studies, such as stress, performance anxiety, anxiety, depression or a stressful life situation. You can also plan personal study arrangements together with the study psychologist concerning any learning difficulties you may have. The aim of the confidential discussions is to find solutions to problems arising from studies, different life situations and relationships. In accordance with the needs, there can be from one to five meetings with the study psychologist. The service is free of charge for students.

The study psychologist is an authorised health care professional, whose competencies include questions related to learning, motivation and mental health. The service is a part of the guidance offered at JAMK. The study psychologist closely cooperates with the student health services of the City of Jyväskylä and refers students to other health care services, when necessary. The aim is to offer students a support network in which they find the individual services best supporting their studies.
