Description

The students graduating from the Degree Programme in Entrepreneurship and Business Competence are developers in their own area of expertise, and they can act responsibly, producing competitive business. The key areas of studies are strategic management, new business development, financial management as well as marketing management in both national and international environments. The studies promote the students’ skills in internationalisation and entrepreneurship. The studies in the research and development aim to increase the students’ competences in essential methods of applied research, working life development and project management.

Studies

Targeted competence

The objective of the studies is that the students can foresee national and international development of their own field and build up competences of their own organisation based on this information. The students develop their competences also for recognising opportunities from changes in the global environment and formulating the right strategies to capture them. After graduation, the students are able to renew business models and act as developers and maintainers of business information systems. By means of research, the students can select, analyse and evaluate data and information required in research in order to develop new operating models, and to utilise them in business, also as entrepreneurs.

Degree profile

The Degree Programme in Entrepreneurship and Business Competence focuses on the areas of strategic management, new business development in global environment, strategic marketing management and financial management. Studies comprise defining strategies, carrying out leadership and change management in accordance with them, and the role of financial management in strategies and goal-oriented management. The studies offer tools for developing the work community and the student’s own competences. Marketing and management of services and brand management require innovative operating methods. Students can also get acquainted with international markets and utilisation of new kinds of innovations in the global environment.  The key issues are creating and utilising professional networks and partnerships.

Structure and completion of studies

The studies include core studies, elective professional studies, elective studies as well as the master’s thesis as a working-life development assignment. The studies consist of courses and wider competence areas.

The structure of the studies (90 cr):

• Core Studies 20 ECTS
• Research and Development 15 ECTS (part of Core Studies)
• Elective Professional Studies 15 ECTS
• Elective Studies 10 ECTS
• Master's Thesis 30 ECTS

The Core Studies can be completed either in Finnish or in English:

• Strategic Management and Leadership 20 ECTS

In addition, the Core Studies include Research and Development Studies 15 ECTS.

Common Elective Professional Studies in multidisciplinary groups are:

• Management and Leadership 15 ECTS or
• Entrepreneurship and New Business Development 15 ECTS

Entrepreneurship and Business Competence Studies

Elective Professional Studies of the Degree Programme or studies completed in other Master's Degree Programmes can be accepted as Elective Studies. In addition, the students can utilise Open online studies offered by international institutes of higher education, the MOOC courses, in accordance with the Personal Learning Plan.

The studies are available in both Finnish and English. It is possible to complete the entire Degree Programme in English.

Assessment and learning guidance

Learning outcomes are assessed in relation to the learning objectives of the course. Assessment decisions are based on the assessment criteria provided in the course descriptions. Courses are assessed on the assessment scale specified in the course description. According to its purpose, the scale may be either of five steps: 5 (excellent), 4 (very good), 3 (good), 2 (satisfactory) and 1 (adequate) or a pass (P)/fail (0). Completion of the course has been failed (fail (0)) if the student does not achieve the minimum outcomes set for completion of the course.

The student has the right to know how the criteria apply him or her. The grade is entered into the transcript of records no later than one month after the declared time of completion of the course and always before the end of the school year.

Forms of study

​Part-time studies

The programme is implemented as part-time studies, where the contact lessons take place 1–2 times per month (Friday – Saturday). The time between contacts may vary depending on the time required by the course assignments. The courses usually include a pre-assignment to be submitted in advance.

It is also possible to build a full-time study programme through a Personalized Learning Plan. I this case students are able to include both first and second academic year studies of the same Degree Programme or courses from other Master's Degree Programme in their Personalised Learning Plans.

JAMK University of Applied Sciences has several international partner institutions, where students can complete their studies. The studies are included in the student's Personal Learning Plan, which ensures their full accreditation as a part of the degree. The students also have an opportunity to take a study tour abroad for 1-2 weeks, for example for an intensive course organised by the San José State University in California, USA.

Graduation

In order to complete a Master’s Degree the student is required to carry out  the studies within his/her study period in accordance with his/her Personal Learning Plan. Further information in the Degree Regulations.

​Employment and further studies

Professional profiles of graduates with examples

A large number of graduates have found employment in expert and supervisory positions in industry, particularly in human resource management, marketing and financial management. Many are also employed in expert and managerial positions in the public sector.  In addition, graduates have found positions in the field of trade, financing sector, or vocational education.  Some have started new business activities or developed their existing company.

​Further studies

The master's degree of the university of applied sciences is a University Master's Degree. It is possible for a UAS Master’s level graduate to get admission to the scientific or artistic postgraduate studies of universities (§ 37/558/2009). Students can also apply for the corresponding follow-up training programs at universities abroad. The University of Applied Sciences also offers continuing education opportunities for specialisation studies as well as in working life based continuing education. All further studies must be applied for separately.

Other information

Planning

The objectives of the Degree Programme curriculum have been derived from the operating environment analysis produced by the School of Business, JAMK's strategy, and the School’s core competence areas. The planning has been carried out in cooperation with representatives from the regional working life (e.g. Osuuskauppa Keskimaa, the Central Finland OP Bank, Nordea Bank Finland Plc, Metso Paper Ltd, Kesko). In addition, the alumni of the Degree Programmes were interviewed along with the representatives of their organisations (such as John Crane Safematic Oy, Osuuskauppa Keskimaa, Lidl) regarding the competence needs. The methods used to compile the data include the Futures Wheel method, in which the students and the interest group representatives ponder on the future trends together. Lecturers and principal lecturers working in the Degree Programme actively follow requirements of working life via thesis guidance and development projects, among other things. The contents of courses have been renewed in cooperation with e.g. Jyväskylä Energy Group, Paytrail and Aava & Bang Oy.  The needs for change are discussed in department meetings as well as the joint meetings of JAMK's master's degrees.

It is essential to include the international partner institutions in the curriculum planning (e.g. University of Debrecen, Larochelle Business School, San José State University, Fachhochschule bfi Wien). The representatives of the Degree Programme are members in the following networks: Microeconomics of Competitiveness, Harvard PRME (Principles for Responsible Management Education) and EFMD (European Foundation for Management Development).
