Barrier-free Learning Environment

Everybody has the right to study in a barrier-free environment. You can study in accordance with your plans even if you suffer from a disability, an illness or learning difficulties or came from a different cultural or language background or if there are other matters affecting your studies. You get support and guidance for your studies.

Barrier-free student selection process

The entrance examinations may require special arrangements for those with hearing impairment, sight impairment, diminished physical capability, learning difficulty or health. If you require special arrangements (assistive devices, special facilities) at JAMK, please contact Admissions Services (the wesite of JAMK), tel. +358 40 556 0409, admissions(at)jamk.fi for further assistance.

Barrier-free studying

If you need support or special arrangements during your studies, consult first your study counsellor of your school. She/he will help you in organising support and you can discuss with her/him in confidence on what support you need based on your own experience or documents.

You need to complete the application form (pdf) for additional assistance. Your unit's head of department or programme will decide on the type of support that was applied for.

The support may involve longer exams, alternative exam practices, online studies, additional training for language skills, interpreter services and different assistive devices. In most cases, lecture and other material can also be provided in advance. If you suffer from reading, writing or perception difficulties that affect your study performance, why not register for the courses of Fluent Study Techniques (1-5 cr). You can also participate in dyslexia assessment twice a year. Please, read further information on courses and dyslexia assessment.

Taking into consideration the additional support you have received, and your need for support in your studies, you can also get support from your career tutor. The career tutor will guide you in the drafting of a Personal Learning Plan, or PLP, considering the needed choices of studies and the schedule for completion of the studies. These matters also come up in the annual PLP discussions with the career tutor.

Audio books can be ordered by bachelor’s degree and master’s degree students and students of the Open Studies path who have difficulties reading regular books due to dyslexia, disability, illness or another similar reason. The service offers both ready-made books and course books made on demand, in Finnish and in English.

If you require the services of the Celia library, you should contact the library’s Celia contact person (kirjasto(at)jamk.fi) or the library’s customer service.

JAMKO supports in matters of equality

Student Union supports you in questions of equality, non-discrimination and ethical principles and makes sure that students are treated equally. If you have questions or problems regarding equality and barrier free learning you are supported by JAMKO's trusteeship responsible in social policy: sopo(a)jamko.fi. In possible cases of bullying or harassment, you can get in touch with JAMKO’s harassment contact person: hairinta(at)jamko.fi.
