​Description

In the degree programme in Social Services, the students complete a degree of Bachelor of Social Services in health and social studies. In the degree programme in Social Services, the studies are practically-oriented and based on theoretical multidisciplinary information and research. The studies include team learning, lectures, online teaching as well as project studies and practical training.

Bachelors of Social Services may work after graduation as experts of social counselling and education for municipalities, companies and organisations. In their work, they promote the well-being and equality of individuals and communities and develop social services to correspond to changing social conditions.

Degree-related qualifications

The occupational title of sosionomi, a Bachelor of Social Services who is a social services professional, can only be used and the profession practised by a graduated licensed Bachelor of Social Services. The professional qualifications for a Bachelor of Social Services are regulated by law in the Act on Social Welfare Professionals (Laki sosiaalihuollon ammattihenkilöistä, 817/2015) and monitored by Regional State Administrative Agencies and Valvira (National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health).

For the post of a kindergarten teacher, a Bachelor of Social Services must have completed studies on early childhood education and care and social pedagogy consisting of 60 credits at a minimum.

Targeted competence

After completing the degree programme in Social Services, Bachelors of Social Services are familiar with the service system that promotes well-being and social security, the processes and working methods of social rehabilitation as well as the ways and methods of producing social services. In addition, they can develop services and service structures and anticipate changes in society and future service needs. Bachelors of Social Services can support and guide their customers in their different stages of growth, development and learning and support and encourage the participation of families and other communities in their everyday life and changing life situations. They act as experts in networking and multi-professional social and health services as well as in development and first-line management positions. They follow professional and ethical principles in their work.

Degree profile

The students' special competence is formed by the competence areas of social counselling or education chosen based on their Personal Learning Plan and career plan. The profile of the degree programme in Social Services is focused on social counselling and social rehabilitation as well as early childhood education, family work and child welfare. Through the elective professional studies and practical training offered in the degree programme, students may also acquire entrepreneurship and internationalisation competence.

Degree programme application and admission

Structure and completion of studies

In the first year of studies, the students acquire basic skills in client work and services, operating environments as well as promoting well-being and health in the field of health care and social services. They adopt a dialogic, reflective, entrepreneurial and investigative approach to work as well as the principles of professional ethics. In the second year, students develop their professional competence in the client work, client services, counselling tasks and methods of social counselling or early childhood education.

During the third and fourth years, the students acquire more participatory social competence, development competence with a research approach and management competence. Later in their studies and in their bachelor's theses, students expand, deepen and apply their competence in their chosen expertise area in social services by working in the multidisciplinary Future Factory learning environment with authentic working life projects and commissions. The students' degree can also be constructed based on a personal focus on entrepreneurship in the field of social services or in international work.

Forms of study

Part-time studies and full-time studies

Both forms of study incorporate LAB work which refers to the quick testing of service products created from real working life needs as well as from research, development and innovation projects. Digital learning opportunities, such as electronic materials, network interaction, production of video materials and remote participation, are utilised increasingly in the studies.

Graduation

To be awarded a Bachelor’s degree certificate, the student must complete the studies of the degree programme within his/her study period in accordance with his/her Personal Learning Plan.

JAMK University of Applied Sciences gives the student a certificate for completing a degree at a university of applied sciences (210 credits). The certificate includes a transcript of records, in which the Bachelors of Social Services who have become qualified as a kindergarten teacher receive a separate mention of their qualifications.

Employment and further studies

​Professional profiles of graduates with examples

Bachelors of Social Services are mainly employed in specialist positions in municipalities, the private sector in the field of social services as well as organisations, most often in various counselling and educational positions as well as managerial and supervisory positions in service units.

 Further studies

University of Applied Sciences offers various opportunities for studying and learning throughout one's career. These include Master's Degree studies, specialisation studies, diplomas of higher education, the extensive range of courses offered through open studies and continuing education.

The student who has graduated with a Bachelor's degree may continue his/her studies in a Master's degree programme after gaining at least three years of work experience. A Master's degree from a university of applied sciences is a higher post-secondary degree. Studies can also be continued by applying for a university Master's degree programme or similar programmes. After a Bachelor's degree from a university of applied sciences, it is also possible to continue studies at higher education institutes abroad in Master's degree level programmes.

A student who completes a Master's degree may receive an opportunity for further studies in science or arts at universities (Section 37/558/2009). All further studies must be applied for separately.

Planning

The planning of education is based on an extensive literature review and an analysis of the future of the operating environment in health care and social services as well as interviews with experts on future competence. In addition to the teachers, the planning work has involved representatives of the students as well as representatives of the field of health care and social services from public, private and non-governmental organisations.  The common and profession-specific future competence in health care and social services have been mapped in the planning meetings.
